Jill at the Beach.

Voici un autre dessin qui me tient particulièrement à coeur, et qui sera également disponible très bientôt en petit et en grand format. Cette "Jill at the Beach" est ma toute première "Femme de Mer", et je suis heureux de pouvoir enfin vous la présenter. J'ai commencé sa réalisation l'été dernier et ne l'ai achevée que réçemment, le personnage ayant nécessité plusieurs modifications qui m'ont demandé un peu de recul et de réflexion.

Le paysage représente un littoral typique de ma région, de mon pays, le sud de la France. Je l'ai créé essentiellement à partir de croquis nature réalisés sur le terrain, dans un endroit où je me sens particulièrement chez moi, et qui s'appelle la "Côte Bleue". Je souhaite à tous de venir un jour la découvrir. Elle est douce, calme, humble, accueillante. Je la surnomme "mon petit coin" :)

Jill, quant à elle, est le genre de femme que j'aime emmener dans cet endroit. Le genre de femme que j'aime tout court en fait. Elle n'est pas une bimbo de bande dessinée, c'est juste une femme normale, simplement normale. Vraie et jolie. Un peu espiègle, douce, calme, humble, et accueillante. Un peu comme mon petit coin :)

Another drawing which is very important to my heart, and which will be available pretty soon in little and big format, too. This "Jill at the Beach" is my fisrt "Femme de Mer" (Women of Sea) and I'm finally glad to introduce her to you. I started its drawing last summer and completed it those last weeks. The fact is that a few time of reflection and step backwards going has been needed to modify the character in the way I wanted to obtain it.

The landscape represents a typical coastline of my region, my country, South of France. I based it from several roughs drawn in the field, in a place called "Côte Bleue" (Blue Coast). I wish to you all to come and discover it one day. Soft, quiet, humble, welcoming. I call it "my little own corner" :)

Jill is the kind of woman I like to take to this place. The kind of woman I just like. She's not a comic book bimbo, just a normal woman, just normal. True and cute. A little humourous, with a soft well tempered and quiet behaviour, humble and welcoming. The same way my own little corner is :)

The Nurseman.

Voici "The Nurseman", premier dessin de la ligne "Etrange" que je souhaite développer sur le thème de la science-fiction. Il sera bientôt disponible à la vente, sous forme de cartes postales et de grands formats dont la nature reste à déterminer.....

Comme souvent dans mon travail, tout est parti d'une sorte de vision, celle d'un astronaute trouvant un oeuf sur une planète rocailleuse. Puis l'idée s'est transformée, la planète est devenue une caverne, portant à flanc de rochers des arbres noueux aux racines extérieures, et de mystérieux oeufs portant d'étranges visages, qui semblent comme dérangés et quelque peu inquietés par cet étrange personnage à tête de cerf.

Le choix du personnage m'a donné matière à réflexion... Je voulais quelque chose de médical, mais si l'idée d'un humanoïde à tête d'animal me plaisait, je la trouvais néanmoins trop proche du déja-vu. Le côté Moëbius ou Miyazaki...et je pensais plutôt dessiner deux extraterrestres proches de l'être humain. Ayant procédé aux essais, je m'aperçus qu'il était malgré tout préférable de conserver mon idée de base, celle d'un être mi-homme, mi-animal. Graphiquement plus satisfaisante, elle s'harmonisait mieux au thème de la vie cachée, et conférait même une sorte de mystique à l'ensemble. Ma mère me rappella par la suite que le cerf était le symbole de la renaissance. Cette caverne représentant une sorte de matrice, je pense que je m'en étais en quelque sorte souvenu inconsciemment...

This is "The Nurseman", first drawing of the line "Etrange" (Weird) I want to develop on the Sci Fi thema. It will be available in postcards and big size the nature of which is still to determine, soon....

As it often happens, things came from a kind of a vision, an astronaut find an egg on a rocky planet. Then the idea has its form transformed, the planet became a cave, with exteral roots knotty trees on rocks, and mysterious strange-faced eggs, which seem to be disturbed and a little worry about this strange stag-headed character.

The choice of the character has needed reflection... I wanted something in relation with medicine, but if I liked the idea of an animal-headed humanoïd, I thought it was not original enough, too much already seen. A kind of Moëbius or Miyazaki artwork... so I thought it was a better idea to draw two aliens close of human beings. Having tried, I understood my first idea was the best, a semi-man semi-animal being. It was more satisfying as a drawing, more in harmony with the thema of a secret hided life, and it could even confer on the whole a kind of mysticism. My mother told me later that the stag was a symbol of rebirth. This cave being represented as a kind of matrix, I think I remembered it unconsciously...

Perspective drawing

This is the first step for the drawing of the background to place behind the last week Spider-Man. A simple one-vanishing point perspective. The orthogonals determine the harmonious aligning of elements like buildings, windows, sidewalks, piers, and so on... Other elements like cars, water tower, and clouds will be added on the same basis later. The second step will be to "dress" the buildinds and to add details.

Voici la première étape de la construction du décor à placer derrière le Spider-Man de la semaine dernière. Une simple perspective à un point de fuite. Les lignes de fuite déterminent l'alignement harmonieux des éléments tels que les immeubles, les trottoirs, les quais, etc... D'autres éléments comme les voitures, le château d'eau, et les nuages seront ajoutés plus tard à partir de la même base. La deuxième étape consistera à "habiller" les immeubles et à rajouter des détails.

Background

This is my idea for the background.... I think it will be pretty cool when finished. I'll use model pictures for the urban landscape, especcially for the architecture.

Web suit....

The most difficult part of the job, to me, is the drawing of the web suit. Well... I would say you got to make the weblines come with the body's motion.... yes... and to take the seams into account.... without too much cheating... you know what I mean, to cheat with the shadows... I have a big big admiration for the artists who draw Spider-Man every day, because when you really want to draw him seriously, you don't play my friend ! :) )

Yesterday night, I visited the page of a girl named Amber, who makes her own superheroes suits, in a very precise and serious way, I mean she has talent ! I wonder what she could think about the creation of a Spidey suit....

Spider-Man, Spider-Man...... :) )

This is a first sketch for a Spider-Man I've promised to a friend of mine's son. I scarcely draw Spideman who's the most difficult-to-draw comic book hero, according to me. You must pay attention to the attitude, which must be acrobatic, strong, and flexible at the same time ! An exaggerated motion can be a good thing too, if the whole remains harmonious !

A main point I'd like to insist on with my workshop pupils is to breack the articulations ! Here, to strengthen Spidey's motion, I've bend his right whrist and his left foot, opened his left hand in the same way he would have done if he wanted to grab something, and applied the basic rule of the 3 axes (eyes, torso, and hips) which are turned on 3 different directions (but not too much !!!). Same story for the head which goes forward to strengthen the attitude.

Jour d'hiver...

Directement exécuté aux feutres, sans crayonné préliminaire, sans recherche préalable de modèle de texture neigeuse ou botanique... Tracé sans perspective, au hasard, sans possibilité de correction...

Simplement laisser venir, sans but précis... Dessiner pour me détendre, c'est la fin de l'année et je suis d'une humeur de neige... Bientôt la nouvelle année et de nouveaux défis.
