Homework, part I

Before going further with any kind of new project, I want to offer myself a period of revision of my basics. Some private events having caught my attention recently, I have been obliged to stop drawing for nearly three months. So this coming back is the good moment to check everything, and to see what can be done better.

Then today, I started to re-work my 3D models, and to review the basis for the faces, using photos references, how to do books, and video lessons. I did these four ones, trying to focus on a precise and realistic shape, on easy and less easy angles. Inking them was also the opportunity to use my new killer Pentel Touch felt :)

It's not absolutely perfect, but it's a nice beginning. I'll try to keep "doing my homework" like this and to show you some pieces, when it is nice or interesting.

Avant d'aller plus loin sur tout nouveau projet, je veux m'offrir une petite période de révision. Récemment, certains événements personnels ont accaparé mon attention, et j'ai été obligé d'arrêter le dessin pendant approximativement trois mois. Ce retour est donc le bon moment pour faire le point, et voir ce qui peut être amélioré.

Donc aujourd'hui, j'ai commencé à retravailler mes modèles 3D, et à revoir mes bases pour les visages, utilisant des références photographiques, ainsi que des livres et des vidéos pédagogiques. J'ai fait ces quatre là, en essayant de me concentrer sur une forme précise et réaliste, sur des angles faciles, et sur des moins faciles. Les encrer était également l'occasion d'essayer mon nouveau feutre tueur Pentel Touch :)

Ce n'est pas absolument parfait, mais c'est un bon début. J'essaierai de continuer à "faire mes devoirs"  et à vous montrer des trucs, quand ça sera joli ou intéressant.

Démo Communication, storyboard planche 01

Je travaille actuellement à la réalisation d'une petite démonstration sur le thème de la communication d'entreprise, en vue de séduire de potentiels clients :)

Voici  le storyboard plus ou moins détaillé de la première planche, il y en aura quatre. Lorsqu'il s'agit de se mettre au service d'un message éducatif ou communicationnel, l'objectif est de privilégier la clarté et la lisibilité. Faire en sorte que le travail graphique mette en valeur le propos, mais sans distraire le lecteur de ce propos. 

Ici, c'est une démonstration, donc mon objectif est double : de façon générale, faire en sorte que mon dessin parle de lui-même. C'est à dire raconte une "histoire" d'entreprise compréhensible sans aucun texte ni récitatif. Ensuite, de rester simple et sobre sur les cases explicatives comme les 4, 5, et 6, et d'entourer celles-ci d'éléments graphiques un peu plus "fun", comme la contre-plongée sur l'arrivée de l'hélicoptère en case 1, ou la plongée sur la sortie des deux ingénieurs de leur salle de travail, en dernière case. Les deux cases se répondant par leur angles de vues opposés. Dans le premier cas, on est impressionné par la hauteur de l'immeuble, et donc par la compagnie, et dans le deuxième, on assiste en spectateur à quelque chose qui est en train de se passer, et on se demande ce qui va suivre.

I'm currently working on a little demo dealing with corporate communication, to attract some potential clients :)

Here is the more or less detailed storyboard of a first page. Four are scheduled. When it deals with serving an educational or communicational purpose, the goal is to focus on clearness, and to produce something easy-to-be read. The graphics have to valorize the message, but they must not distract the reader.

Here is a demonstration, so I have two purposes in mind : in a general way, to produce a drawing which speaks by itself, I mean to tell a kind of "story" that you can understand without any word or narrative captions. Second, to stay simple and sobre on panels containing explanations, like 4, 5, and 6, and then, to surround these ones by some graphic "fun stuffs" like the ant view on the helicopter arrival in panel 1, or the bird's eye view on the last panel, when the two engineers get out of their work room. These two panels replying to each other, due to their opposed points of view. In the first panel, we are impressed by the height of the building, so as by the company, and in the last panel, we can watch that something is happening, and we wonder what will be the following.

And this is the beautiful Ms Marvel (and not Miss Marvel as we call her in french) in a modern version her classic red costume. Historically, the character of Carol Danvers apeared in 1968 as a member of the USAF, and her transformation into Ms Marvel came in 1977, when her human genes were mixed with some alien kree ones. The term of "Ms" which can be used to speak to a woman without mentioning if she is single or married has been expressively chosen. The goal was to create a strong heroine who could match with her male collegues.

The character has lived a lot of evolutions since her debut, notably a change of costume in the eighties, replacing red by blue. She became a member of the Avengers, has been linked to the X-Men, and if I remember well, had a cosmic career as Binary, a member of the Starjammers. After, she came back to Earth, and took back her seat in USAF. Recently, she disapeared for a while during the "Dark Reign" saga, and criminal Moonstone took her place under Norman Osborn's head. Moonstone, the "new" Ms Marvel adopted a modern red version of her classic suit.

Having previously drawn her with her blue suit, I chose to dress her in red this time, using this newer version. If my informations are good, this same version is the one that has been used in the second season of the cartoon Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

According to the current rumors, Ms Marvel will take place in the upcoming movie "Guardians of the Galaxy", introducing Thanos, and the second opus of "The Avengers", coming in 2015. No actress has been chosen yet, but a lot of fans express their preference for the heroin of "Chuck", Yvonne Strahovski. I don't watch the show, but having looked at Ms Strahovski pictures, I think it might be the idea of the century. Because she really looks like Carol Danvers  !

Noire Finance

Bonjour !

Il y a quelques mois, je diffusais ici une vidéo reprenant un documentaire d'ARTE sur l'obsolescence programmée. Je vous invite à nouveau à le visionner si vous n'en avez pas eu le temps. Cliquez sur le libellé "Média" et vous le trouverez.

Aujourd'hui, je voudrais vous proposer l'excellent documentaire "Noire Finance" que la chaîne a récemment diffusé. Ce documentaire traite de la finance folle, vous expliquant par le détail son fonctionnement et les conséquences de ses conséquences.

Bien que je garde généralement mes opinions politiques ou économiques pour la sphère privée, je pense que diffuser le plus possible ce type de document est une nécessité d'utilité publique. Je vous invite à le visionner, et à le diffuser à votre tour.

Home of the Amazons : pages # 8 and # 9, inked

Page # 8 has been drawn on a 17 x 22, which makes the work for composition easier. However, it makes my work on the shape more difficult and I prefer to work on a bigger size, or eventually to work each panel separately.

Page # 9 has been done on a big 17,5 x 24,8, which makes me more comfortable !


Sorry for all the things that disappear, and the alterations in the order of the posts. I'm just arranging my own mess ! :) )

La huitième planche a été dessinée sur un A 3, ce qui facilite le travail de composition. Cependant, cela rend mon travail de la forme plus difficile, et je préfère travailler sur un plus grand format, voire dessiner mes cases séparément.

La planche 9 a quant à elle été faite sur un format de 44,5 x 63 avec lequel je me sens nettement plus à l'aise !

Pardon pour toutes les choses qui disparaissent, et pour les changements dans l'ordre des posts. En fait, je range mon bazar ! :) )

For those who are interested, this ship does really exist ! She's called the Grand Princess, and she sails mediterranean sea for Princess Cruise company. I chose her for my Amazons comic, because she regularly goes till greek islands, and because her name makes a wink to Diana, who's a princess too :)

  
No need to tell it's a true nightmare to hand draw this kind of things, when you're not familiar with it. And no need to precise that all that is pure fiction. I'm the last person who would like to hear about a ship sinking, or about an accident including a ship.

Pour ceux que cela intéresse, ce navire existe réellement ! Il s'agit du Grand Princess qui sillone la mer méditerranée pour la compagnie Princess Cruise. Je l'ai choisi pour ma BD Amazone, parce qu'il se rend régulièrement jusqu'aux îles grecques, et parce que son nom fait un clin d'oeil à Diana, qui est princesse, elle aussi :)
 

Pas besoin de vous dire que dessiner ce genre de trucs à la main est un cauchemar quand on n'en a pas l'habitude. Et pas besoin de préciser que tout cela est purement fictif. Je suis la dernière personne qui aimerait entendre parler d'un navire en train de couler, ou d'un accident impliquant un navire.

Flic ou Voyou, Part I

On 17 x 22 / Sur un A3

Comme vous vous en êtes surement aperçus, je n'ai rien posté depuis un moment, même si je suis présent ici et là, chez les amis. La raison est que des préoccupations personnelles et professionnelles requièrent actuellement toute mon attention, et j'ai laissé de côté la planche à dessin, afin de me documenter et de voir les différentes options qui s'offrent à moi. Tout ça prendra fin pendant le mois de septembre, et comme le Terminator, je reviendrai après, avec un horizon tout neuf !

Aujourd'hui, j'ai passé une partie de l'après-midi avec un ami (le dessinateur de presse Ysope), et je lui disais que je n'aimais toujours pas faire de portraits. De retour à la maison, j'ai jeté un oeil sur le programme télé (oui, je sais, j'ai une vie triste et ennuyeuse lol...), et j'ai vu qu'un de mes films préférés de Jean-Paul Belmondo était programmé pour ce soir : "Flic ou Voyou"

Et ça m'a pris, d'un coup ! J'ai décidé de rendre un petit hommage à ce grand Monsieur, histoire d'évacuer mon stress, et parce que certaines personnes sont irremplaçables, et notre Bebel national, Monsieur Jean-Paul Belmondo est de ceux-là.

As you might have understood, I haven't post anything for a while, even if I'm still present here and there, at friend's. The reason is that some personal and professional questions are currently requesting all my attention, and I have left the drawing board, to document myself and to check the various options I have. All that will end during september, and like the Terminator, I'll be back after with a new horizon !

Today, I spent a little time with a friend of mine during the afternoon (the newspaper cartoonist Ysope), and I was telling him I still didn't like to draw portraits. Back at home, I left an eye at the TV schedule (I know, my life is sad and boring lol...), and I saw that one of my favourite Jean-Paul Belmondo's movie was programmed for this evening : "Flic ou Voyou" (which means : "Cop or Hooligan").

Mister Jean-Paul Belmondo - we call him "Bebel" with affection - is one of the most loved actors in France ! Now retired, he has a long long career and has played a lot of characters, from drama to comedy. In the seventies, he was also a big action movie star ! Very manly and athletic, not only he was a good actor, but also a great stuntman, very brave and bold !

And it took me, suddenly ! I decided to make this little tribute to him, just to make my own stress go away, and because some people are not replaceable, and he is one of these.

Now, I leave, the film is starting !!!! :) )

This is a drawing I had done one month ago for a colleague. I wanted to give it to her before sharing, but I haven't seen her yet, and she always tell me that she has no time, blah blah blah... and so on... you know how women do... so.... oh well ^^ It is inspired by our region, Provence, in South of France :)

Voici un dessin que j'avais fait pour une collègue, il y a un mois. Je voulais le lui donner avant de le montrer ici, mais je ne l'ai pas encore revue, et elle me dit toujours qu'elle n'a pas le temps, bla bla bla... etc... vous savez comment font les femmes... donc, hein, bon ^^ C'était inspiré de notre région, la Provence :)
